Trying to get to Alaska on a budget?

Has anyone traveled to Alaska and not spend an arm and a leg? I was doing some research online and found a round trip by rail from Anchorage to Mt. McKinley Princess Lodge, 3 days, 2 nights and thought the price was good ($ 370 per person) then when you add in airfare and a single activity, such as fishing, then you really start getting there. I had not looked for a cruise I just expect them to be high. My husband and I never had a honeymoon and we have always said that this would be the place to go so I started to look into it. Any idea you have would be appreciated.

I worked on the railroad princess as a tour guide for 5 months. It is very difficult, not to spend money in Alaska, but is incredible. El Monte. McKinley Princess Lodge is slightly smaller and with class. It's literally in the middle of nowhere. In fact, the motor bus ride to the hostel is about 50 minutes from Talkeetna (the train stop). Mid September is the cheapest time to travel there, as many of the tourist shops are about to close. The best month to be there since July is not as rampant mosquitoes and everything is so green and beautiful. We seem to have seen more wildlife in July also. I would recommend you go to Alaska, but the truth is better to go when you have the money to spend. Alaska is a unique opportunity in life and not want to miss.
